Pollution that is Your Problem

Non-Point Source Pollution is simply a fancy term for the garbage people do not put directly into Our Lakes and Rivers. This primarily includes chemical runoff from the excess fertilization of your lawns and chemicals and excess plant materials that end up on our streets only to be washed down the sewer and directly into our nearest water source. You don’t have to live overlooking Sunrise Point to have an effect, for better or worse, on the health and viability of Our Lake. That catchy phrase “Every Curb is a Shoreline” is the God’s Honest Truth.

Causes, Symptoms, and Preventative Actions

Three Problems with Simple Solutions

1. Excess Phosphorus and nitrogen runoff from poor lawn maintainence
-Mulch grass clippings for a cost free fertilizer or use non-phosphorus fertilizer.

2. Excess phosphorus and nitrogen from an accumulation of discarded plant material
-Buy or build a compost bin and provide yourself with top notch soil for next year.

3. Nutrient Buildup and silt accumulation from dirty curb and gutters
-Street sweepers do their part, but homeowners need to take responsibility for keeping their streets clean and clear of debris.

Plant for Prevention

1. Plant raingardens - These beautiful landscape additions do wonders for Our local water quality
2. Restore the shores - Natural shoreline looks great, reduces wave action, and protects your property from erosion and the Canada Goose
3. Plant Native Gardens - Native platings encourage wildlife and can be an excellent way to beautify your home and reduce pests
